SEARCY – The Harding men's soccer team snapped a five-game losing skid and posted its first shutout in Gulf South Conference play in more than three seasons with a 2-0 victory over Alabama-Huntsville on Sunday.
Harding (4-9-0, 1-3-0 GSC) scored its first goal in four GSC games this season in the 42nd minute. Junior Chase Fowler received a throw-in from freshman Connor Galloway and flicked a header over UAH keeper Geoffrey Merry for his third goal of the season.
Alabama-Huntsville (5-6-0, 0-2-0 GSC) lost its second straight conference game and fell to Harding for the first time since 2002. The Chargers managed only two shots on goal in the entire game, both stopped by Bison sophomore Andrew Flesher. It was Flesher's second shutout of the season and the first for Harding in a GSC game since a 1-0 victory over Ouachita Baptist on Oct. 3, 2004.
Harding's second goal came early in the second half when Bison sophomore defender Jay Skinner evaded the Alabama-Huntsville defense and sent a low ball across the face of the UAH goal. Charger defender Devin Schleif tried to clear the ball off the end line but deflected it in for an own goal.
The victory kept Harding's hopes for its first Gulf South Conference Tournament berth alive. The Bisons need wins over Christian Brothers and Ouachita Baptist in their final two games.
